Oosterend is known as Texel’s prettiest village. The grand Maartenskerk is its focal point, while picturesque streets and alleys, lined with lovely old facades wind their way around it. Around the church there are shops, restaurants and a café, bringing the village to life. A large, weekly flea market is held in the summer months.
Fishing was an important part and source of income for the former residents of Oosterend. The harbour on the Wadden side, near the IJzeren Kaap, was used for oyster and seaweed fishery. The people of Oosterend roamed the entire North Sea with their large cutters. Due to silting, the shipping industry moved to the village that is also known as the fishing village: Oudeschild. Many cutter fishermen still live in Oosterend, but agriculture also provides employment in this region.
Religion is typical for the village of Oosterend. The village was also known as 'Jerusalem of the North'. This was mainly due to the many churches in the village, of which there were as many as seven. Nowadays, there are still three churches: the Maartenskerk, the Sint Martinuskerk and the church building of the Reformed Congregation in the Schoolstraat.
